Inspiration

The inspiration for the treehouse came from many different things but one of the biggest ones was the 1960 version of The Swiss Family Robinson. You can see from the clip below that I have incorporated the same type of helm/ rope/ pulley mechanism as is depicted in the film. Even the parrot is the same red Macaw as in this clip (My Dad crafted this out of wood scraps and modelling paste) . Additionally, the matcher pitcher / bowl system is very similar. We've also created a stream underneath the treehouse in keeping with the film. Also you'll notice the nautical theme carries over into the nightstand lamp, the anchor holding the hanging selves, the bronze octopus, etc.

The inspiration for the treasure hunt also is a collaboration of many childhood treasure hunting favorites such as the Goonies, Indiana Jones (best trilogy ever), Romancing the stone, National treasure, and the Uncharted 4 video game. I used to make treasure hunts for my younger brother all the time when we were kids. I've made treasure hunts in my house for guests that come over. I even did one when I proposed to my wife. Hopefully one day my kids will enjoy my treasure hunts too when they're old enough.

One of my favorite television series to watch is Treehouse Masters (I know it's on Hulu and Youtube). I highly encourage all who love treehouses to watch that show. It'll give you some great creative ideas.

Some of the design choices were very much planned, others were out of pure necessity. For example, the shiplap walls in the screened in portion were built with the materials that we had left over. You might notice some of the same acacia wood floorboards from the master bedroom are used for the walls in the dining room.  We also used  bamboo in the area before it got demolished by a construction site for all the railings and curtain rods and other artistic details in the treehouse. I've always had artistic tendencies growing up, as my dad was a full time wildlife artist when I was growing up. You can see his work here:
